WASHINGTON: The Houston International Seafarers’ Center will give Roger Guenther, executive director of Port Houston, its 2017 Bronze Anchor Award during a banquet in May, the Seafarers’ Center announced Wednesday. The award recognizes an individual, company or organization that has served as a leader and advocate for the welfare of seafarers.
According to the news release, Guenther has assisted chaplains and the Seafarers’ Center staff in navigating the regulatory and bureaucratic landscape associated with a working port. He also has supported the center’s efforts to deliver humanitarian services to seafarers at the Port of Houston. Most recently, Guenther was “instrumental” in relocating the Seafarers’ Center to a newer, more efficient facility. For the past 44 years, seafarers from around the world have been both ministered to and entertained at the center’s original facility at the Port Houston Turning Basin Terminal.
