FBR starts crackdown against over 21,000 non-filers from today

ISLAMABAD: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is starting crackdown against more than 21,000 non-taxpayers from Monday (today).

The FBR teams would raid the business premises of non-taxpayers and seized their goods and records and even impose fine and penalties after arresting them. The action would be taken against those non-taxpayers who are not replying to notices issued for production of documents and records.

This was stated by FBR Member Operations Rehmatullah Wazir while addressing chief commissioners and commissioners of Lahore and Karachi regions, the other day.

The FBR teams would arrest the non-taxpayers under Income Tax Amended Act 2016, Article 125. The raiding teams would seal the business compounds of non-filers in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Hyderabad, Multan, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Sukkur, Abbottabad, Gujrat, Faisalabad and other big cities simultaneously from Monday (today).

FBR sources said that large scale audit exercise had been launched by tax departments but most of taxpayers were not replying accordingly. Therefore, tax offices are imposing fine and penalties under Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.

The Inland Revenue officers are invoking Section 182 to imposing fine and penalties for non-compliance with provisions of Section 177 of the Ordinance. In case a taxpayer fails to produce the record of documents on receipt of first notice then such person will pay a penalty of twenty-five thousand rupees.

In case a taxpayer fails to produce the record or documents on receipt of second notice then such person will pay a penalty of fifty thousand rupees. Meanwhile in case, a taxpayer fails to produce the record or documents on receipt of third notice such person will pay a penalty of one hundred thousand rupees.
