Customs Court approves physical remand of suspect involved in mis-declaration case

KARACHI: Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has remanded a suspect, Shafi Ullah, to the customs custody for his alleged involvement in case of duty and tax evasion of Rs 1,025,112.

During the hearing, Investigation Officer S. Azhar Zaidi produced the accused before the court. During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused in connivance with other accomplices mid-declared goods. However, officials of the customs department detected the mis-declaration and seized the goods.

After his arguments, the court sent him on physical remand and directed the investigation officer to produce him on the next date of hearing along with progress report.

A case was registered against the suspect under section 2 (s) (ii) 16, 32 (1) & (2), 32A, 81 and 157 of the Customs Act, 1969, punishable under clauses (8) (9) (14) (14-A) of section 156 (1) and section 156 (2) of the customs act, 1969 read with section 3, 6, 7A, 33, 34 of the Sales Tax, 1990 further read with section 148 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.
