BBIA staff recovers 240 smart phones from passenger worth Rs2.4m

ISLAMABAD: The Benazir Bhutto International Airport Islamabad staff recovered 240 smart phones from the baggage of a passenger who was carrying smuggled mobile phones in his handbag through Rawal Lounge. The value of seized mobiles has been estimated Rs2.4million.

According to Deputy Collector Naghma-e-Tehenat, the Collector Model Customs Collectorate Islamabad received a tip-off who passed on it to the ASO staff which deputed some staff at the airport to search the passengers. During the checking, the said passenger came through flight PK-212 from Dubai to Rawal Lounge of the BBI airport Islamabad.

The staff deputed there seized 240 smart phones of foreign origin from the baggage of passenger Shiekh Amir Hussain S/o Sheikh Abdul Qadir, a resident of Rawalpindi. Deputy Collector said the accused was trying to escape through the Rawal Lounge with mobile phones in his handbag. The customs staff seized mobile phones and an FIR No: 11/2017 has also been registered against the above said passenger. The passenger has been arrested after serving notice on him under Section 171 of Customs Act-1969.

The Customs Airport ASO staff comprised Inspector Khalid and sepoy Taimor Safder who seized smart mobiles and arrested the accused. Due to new initiatives taken by Collector MCC Islamabad Dr Arslan, the BBIA showed some better performance during current financial year.

The DC told Customs Today that during current financial year (FY16-17), the customs staff deputed at the BBIA seized 2247 mobile phones worth Rs32.89million while the Islamabad customs airport staff seized 2997 mobile phones worth Rs63.20million during the same period of corresponding FY2015-16.
