Imports, exports badly affected due to closure of Torkham border

KHYBER AGENCY: Blockage of Torkham border badly affected export and import process besides to suffer layman after the border and security related issues between Pakistan and Afghanistan needs  immediate solution.

Thousands of local tribal and businessmen went jobless as all business on the border has been closed down. These views were expressed by Mirajuddin Shinwari, Chairman Clearance Agents Association, Torkham and transport leader while addressing a press conference held in Landi Kotal Press Club.

He said that national leaderships of all political parties and members of parliament from the constituency of Khyber Agency had kept silent on the important matter of Torkham border that was regretful.

Tensions arise between countries elsewhere in the world, but suspension of border is not the remedy but table talks produce solution to every problem, he maintained.

Shinwari said that all markets, trading centers, hotels, clearing agencies, etc. located at both sides of the Torkham border had been closed down for the last 27 days that compelled the tribal families to sleep with empty stomachs. Besides thousands of transport movement vehicles across the country had been halted which is causing growing financial problems to the families of tribal transporters.

He also urged the Afghan nationals to build pressure on their Afghan regime to come to table talks with Pakistan and resolve the issues through meaningful dialogues.

He demanded of the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan to forthwith address their grievances and resolve the Torkham issue through bilateral dialogue.
