Customs Court awards imprisonment to suspect booked in smuggled mobile phones case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has awarded 14 days imprisonment and Rs 200,000 fine to a suspect, Muhammad Kashif, on pleading guilty. The suspect was booked while he was attempting to non-duty paid contraband mobile phones, smart watches etc from Dubai by Flydubai Airlines flight no FZ-331.

During the hearing, counsel for the accused filed an application for pleading guilty and left himself on the mercy of the court. After the arguments, the court awarded 14 days imprisonment and Rs 200,000 fine to him. If he fails to pay fine than he will suffer further two months simple imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the customs officials intercepted the accused on March 11, 2017 and recovered 64 used Iphones and Samsung mobile phone, 126  SIM operated smart wrist watches, 30 empty mobile phones boxes and 20 mobile phones chargers from him after he had failed to produce any lawful documents regarding possession of the goods. The officials seized the goods and arrested the suspect.

A case was registered against him in violation of section 2 (s) 16 and 139 of the Customs Act 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) & 70 of section 156 (i) ibid read with baggage rules notified vide SRO-666 (1)/2006 dated 28/06/2006 of section 3 (iii) of Import & Export (Control) Act 1950.
