Customs Court approves physical remand of accused booked in smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has sent a suspect namely Sunil Kumar son of Tillu Ram to customs department on physical remand till April 2, 2017 who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle/ non-duty paid mobile phones from Dubai to Karachi.

During the hearing, investigation officer produced the accused before the court and informed that on March 27, 2017, the customs officials intercepted the suspect and recovered I-Phones 07 and 140 smart phones worth Rs 17,47,200.

According to the investigation, the suspect had failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, the accused was arrested and goods were seized by Model Customs Collectorate Customs House Karachi.

He requested the court for physical remand of the accused for further investigation, after his arguments, court granted his request and sent accused to customs department on physical remand, court also directed the investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.

According to the prosecution, case was registered in violation of section 2(s) 16 and 139 of the customs act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) & 161 of the baggage rules, 2006 notified vide SRO-666(1)/2006 dated 28/06/2006 and Import & Export (Control) Act 1950.
