Customs Court approves physical remand of woman involved in currency smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has remanded Fehmida, wife of Muhammad Karim, to customs custody till April 15, 2017. The suspect was arrested while trying to smuggle Saudi Riyal 100,000 from Sharjah to Karachi.

During the hearing, investigation officer produce her before the court and informed that on a credible information, staff of Modal Customs Collectorate Preventive intercepted the woman and recovered the foreign currency from her possession.

According to the investigation officer, during the search, lady was asked to produce lawful documents, however, she failed to produce any lawful documents or lawful reason, therefore, the said currency were taken into custody and the woman was arrested. He further submitted that prosecution needs further, therefore, the court may send her on physical remand.

After the arguments, the court sent back her to the customs department on physical remand and directed the investigation officer to submit a progress report on the next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, case was registered in violation of section 2 (s) 16 and 139 of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) & 70 of section 156 (i) ibid read with notification of state bank of Pakistan.
