Canada stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.41%

OTTAWA: Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Clean Technology and Materials sectors led shares higher. At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.41%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Element Fleet Management Corp (TO:EFN), which rose 8.81% or 1.00 points to trade at 12.35 at the close. Meanwhile, IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG) added 8.40% or 0.430 points to end at 5.550 and Crew Energy Inc (TO:CR) was up 7.83% or 0.34 points to 4.68 in late trade. The worst performers of the session were TMX Group Limited (TO:X), which fell 6.71% or 5.25 points to trade at 72.97 at the close. Canopy Growth Corp (TO:WEED) declined 6.27% or 0.520 points to end at 7.780 and Exchange Income Corporation (TO:EIF) was down 4.43% or 1.580 points to 34.080.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 601 to 496 and 151 ended unchanged. The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.04% to 12.34. Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.31% or 3.76 to $1219.86 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 3.16% or 1.45 to hit $47.33 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 3.00% or 1.46 to trade at $50.19 a barrel. CAD/USD was up 0.47% to 0.7323, while CAD/EUR rose 0.55% to 0.6739. The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 99.51.
