Unemployment slightly up

LIHUE: Unemployment on Kauai is up slightly from last month, according to a report from the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. With a civilian workforce of 35,950, the number of people unemployed on Kauai is 1,050, or 3 percent of the total. That’s up from 2.8 percent recorded in March. On the state level, the unemployment rate of 2.7 percent remained the same from last month. About 679,000 people were employed and 18,850 were unemployed in April.

“Hawaii’s economy is performing well with the job count at or over 650,000 since August 2016,” said Linda Chu Takayama, director of the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. Within the major industry groupings, trade, transportation and utilities saw the biggest industry with an additional 1,100, following construction with 800, and educational and health services with 700.
