FBR proposes increase in tax rate on import of lower priced mobile phones

KARACHI: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has proposed increase in sales tax on import of low priced mobile phones and at the time of IMEI registration.

Through Finance Bill 2017, it has been proposed to make sales tax rate uniform for both low price and medium price cellular phones at import or local supply stage and at the time of IMEI registration.

The proposed rates have been increased to Rs650 from Rs300 at import stage and further at the time of IMEI registration

  1. Low Priced Cellular Mobile Phones or Satellite Phones
  2. All cameras: 2.0 megapixels or less
  3. Screen size; 2.6 Inches or less

The proposed rates, however, have been reduced to Rs650 from Rs1,000 at import stage and further at the time of IMEI registration

  1. Medium Priced Cellular Mobile Phones or Satellite Phones
  2. One or two cameras: between 2.1 to 10 megapixels
  3. Screen size: between 2.6 inches and 5.0 inches

iii. Microprocessor: less than 2 Ghz
