Customs Court sends suspect on physical remand in tax evasion case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has sent a suspect, Asif Iqbal son of Kala Khan, to customs department on physical remand. The suspect was booked in a case of illegal removal of dutiable/ contraband goods, evading duty and taxes to the tune of Rs 48,28, 567.

During the hearing, the investigation officer informed the court that the suspect is involved in illegal removal of dutiable/ contraband goods i.e 15,900 kilograms (net fabric) in the garb of bed mattresses imported from UAE.

He added that prosecution needs his physical remand for further investigation and arrest of absconders; therefore, the court may send him back to the customs department. After his arguments, the court sent him to the customs department and directed the investigation officer to produce him on the next date of hearing along with progress report.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against accused in violation of section 2(s) 16, 157 and chapter xi of the Customs Act 1969 punishable under section 156 (1) (8) (9) (59) (61) (62) (90) & 156 (2) ibid read with Import & Export Control Act 1950.
