Customs seizes cannabis worth Rs 1.6 crore

SHILLONG: The Customs have seized 1027.260 kg of high quality cannabis worth over Rs 1 crore on the outskirts of the city on Friday. A statement in this regard said that on the basis of specific intelligence received to the effect that huge consignment of illicit cannabis was being transported in a truck bearing Punjab Registration, Customs Headquarters, Preventive, NER, Shillong mounted surveillance in the Shillong Bye pass on June 9 and spotted the 10 wheeler Tata Truck parked on the road side near Diengpasoh village of East Khasi Hills district. However, no occupant was found inside the truck. “Rummaging of the truck resulted in recovery of 1027.260 kg of high quality cannabis cleverly concealed inside a secret chamber made behind the driver’s cabin,” the Customs said.

The cannabis and the truck have been seized and a case was registered under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, the Customs said, adding that total value of seizure has been estimated at Rs. 1.60 crore. This is the second seizure of cannabis by Customs Headquarters, Preventive Unit, Shillong within a span of seven days. On June 3, 534.470 kg of cannabis was seized near Mawrengkeneng and one person was arrested. Present consignment of cannabis originated from Tripura and it’s likely destination was Bihar. Investigation has been launched to nab the persons involved in this illicit narcotics trade, (I.R. Kharkongor, Deputy Commissioner, Headquarters, Preventive said.
