SHC calls Customs Preventive officer to present in person on contempt application

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) directed an alleged contemnor Sardar Abdul Qayyum, Superintendent Preventive of Customs, to file the para-wise comments and must be present in person on the next hearing on a constitutional petition filed by Shamil Sikandar, owner of the Land Rover modelled 2013 against harassment.

A two-member bench, headed by Justice Munib Akhtar, heard the petition. The court also continued interim order passed earlier for the next date of hearing. The court had restrained the customs authorities from taking any coercive action against the petitioner.

During the hearing, counsel for the petitioner filed a contempt application against the abovementioned superintendent and submitted that the alleged contemnor is persistently pressurizing the petitioner to produce the vehicle.

He further submitted that instead of the court order, petitioner is being threatened by the said respondent therefore court may take action against him.

Earlier, counsel informed the court that petitioner purchased the said vehicle after payment of duties and the same has been registered in his name, however officials of the department are trying to snatch his vehicle illegally.

Citing to Chairman, Federal Board of Revenue, Collector of Customs Preventive as respondent, petitioner pleaded the court to kindly restrain the Customs Department from taking any coercive measure against him.
