Customs Court sends suspect to jail involved in gold smuggling

KARACHI: The Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling Court has sent a suspect, Muhammad Saleem, to Central Jail Karachi on judicial remand for attempting to smuggle contraband gold slabs worth Rs 1,703,909.

During the hearing, Investigation Officer Shahzad Wasti produced the accused person in the court and informed that on June 29, 2017, officials of the Customs Preventive intercepted the suspect at Jinnah International Airport and recovered gold slabs weighing 413.32, having the tentative value of Rs 1,703,909.

He further informed the court that during the search, the accused was asked to produced legal documents of such goods, however, he did not produce any legal and lawful documents, therefore, he was arrested and the slabs were seized. He submitted that the investigation has been completed from the said accused person, therefore, the court may send him to Central Jail Karachi on judicial remand.

After his arguments, the court sent him to jail and directed jail authorities to produce him before this court, court also directed investigation officer to complete investigation and submit the charge sheet within reasonable period.

According the prosecution, case was registered for violation of section 2 (s) and 16 of Customs Act 1969 read with SRO-666/2006 punishable under clauses (8) of section 156 (i) ibid.
