MCI UC chairmen stopped from collecting illegal taxes

ISLAMABAD: Municipal Corporation of Islamabad  while issuing a warning letter to various union councils (UCs) has asked the UC chairmen to refrain from indulging in illegal activities like collection of different taxes.

Chief Metropolitan Officer Asad Mehboob Kiani in the letter addressed to chairmen of Union Council Saidpur, Sohan. Lohi Bher and Malpur has noticed that the UCs themselves have started collecting different municipal taxes which is against the Islamabad Local Government Act, 2015.

The MCI top official has reminded that the powers to collect taxes by the UCs was withdrawn through fourth schedule given in the Islamabad Local Government Act, 2015. The UCs indulging in illegal acts are headed by chairmen hailing from both Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) and the ruling PML-N and there is no mechanism of accountability of amount being collected or raised. The UC chairmen of Saidpur who is from PTI had auctioned the cattle market for Rs12.7 million and also started collecting Chungi tax.
