HONG KONG: Hong Kong Customs today (August 3) seized 56 bottles of suspected unsafe cosmetic cream at a retail shop in Tsuen Wan. Customs received referral from related department that cosmetic cream suspected to contain excessive mercury content was being supplied in the market. Customs officers conducted operation today and seized 28 packs (2 bottles per pack) of the suspected unsafe cosmetic cream at a retail shop in Tsuen Wan.
Customs will arrange test for the cosmetic cream. Under the Consumer Goods Safety Ordinance (CGSO), any person who imports, manufactures or supplies consumer goods that do not comply with the general safety requirement commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $100,000 and imprisonment for one year on first conviction, and a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for two years on subsequent conviction.
Customs will continue conducting spot checks with a view to protecting consumers’ safety. Customs reminds traders to comply with the requirements of the CGSO and members of the public not to buy or use cosmetic cream of unknown composition or obtained from doubtful sources.
