FBR serves notices on 1,980 tax evading govt officials

LAHORE: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued notices to around 1,980 tax evading government officials who have been identified through monitoring of withholding tax on the fees paid to the educational institutions.

According to the sources of Customs Today, the Federal Board of Revenue has spotted all the government officials in the audit. The FBR has served notices on them to submit their details since 2015 within 15 days.

The FBR has said that in case of failure in the submission of their tax record, the FBR will take strict legal action against them. On the other hand, the FBR has also decided to issue notices to such individuals who pay Rs200000 and above as education fees in a year, but they are not on the tax roll.

An official of the FBR said the notices will be issued countrywide to individuals asking them to get registered with the tax authorities otherwise tax department would slap fine and penalties on them.

The FBR, through Finance Act-2013, introduced five percent advance tax on annual education fees of Rs200000 and above. The initiative has been taken to bring the people into the tax net who are drawing taxable income. The tax is, however adjustable if taxpayer is included in the active taxpayer-list.
