BRASÍLIA: Brazilian banana exports have increased by almost 61% from January to August of this year compared to that same period in 2016, having totaled 23,200 tonnes, according to the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea).
Despite the low prices achieved in the national market, the fall in exports reflects the fruit’s low quality and its reduced competitiveness when compared to the world’s biggest players exporting this crop.
According to the researchers from Hortifrúti/Cepea, Brazilian banana exports are expected to finish 2017 at low levels, as a smaller supply of Nanica, the most exported variety, is expected. Therefore, it is possible that prices of this type of banana will increase in the domestic market in the coming months, while sales in the foreign market will be limited, due to the attractiveness of Brazil’s prices.
