Customs Court extends physical remand of suspect in currency smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has extended physical remand of a suspect, Murtaza son of Mustafa, and sent back him to the customs department. He was booked in a case of attempting to smuggled contraband foreign currency worth Rs 3,717,300 from Dubai to Karachi.

During the hearing, the investigation officer produced the suspect before the court and informed that a team of the Anti-Smuggling Organization intercepted him at Jinnah International Airport Karachi and searched his bag.

He further informed the court that during the search, officials recovered UAE Dirham 105,500 Saudi Riyal 25,000 from his possession. The suspect was asked to explain his lawful position, however, he failed to explain or produced lawful documents and the reasons, therefore, he was taken into custody along with smuggled foreign currency.

He submitted that prosecution needs further investigations from suspect therefore, he requested physical remand of the accused person. After his request, court sent back the suspect to customs department and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against him for violation of under section 2 (s) of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) of section 156 (i) ibid read with notification of state bank of Pakistan dated 01/06/2015.
