Woman from Peru arrested at Hong Kong airport carrying 2.5kg of cocaine in her body

HONG KONG: A visitor from Peru was arrested at Hong Kong International Airport on Saturday after she was found to be carrying 2.5kg of cocaine packed into 180 condoms inside her body.

fficers said it was the biggest haul involving this trafficking method to be foiled by customs this year.

The 52-year-old suspect was stopped by customs officers after a 20-hour journey to the city from Lima in Peru via Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

During an initial inquiry, she ejected some condoms suspected to contain liquid cocaine from her body.

An X-ray scan at North Lantau Hospital showed she had a large object inside her digestive system.

The woman later discharged 180 condoms containing about 2.5kg of liquid cocaine in Queen Elizabeth Hospital. On Monday morning, her condition was stable.

Customs said the haul was estimated to be worth HK$2.3 million (US$294,000).

In a separate case on Tuesday, customs officers at the airport arrested a 48-year-old woman from Tanzania coming to Hong Kong via Ethiopia for carrying 1kg of cocaine in 70 packets inside her body. The haul was worth HK$920,000.
