KUWAIT CITY:The Public Relations and Security Media Department of Ministry of Interior has denied reports concerning the attempt of a police officer of rank “Colonel” to smuggle imitation goods in three containers.
In a press release issued by the ministry, the department explained that the three containers are still at the port. A police officer of rank “Lieutenant” who works at the Ports Security division had personally intervened for the release of the three containers. He will be referred for investigations and necessary action will be taken against him for intervening in issues that are not within the scope of his responsibilities. Earlier, Director General of the Kuwait General Administration of Customs (KGAC) Jamal Al-Jalawi, had opened a wide investigation into an attempt to smuggle 3 containers out of the Shuwaikh Port, reports Al-Qabas daily. The daily quoting reliable sources said the containers were filled with counterfeit goods. According to a customs official the goods were imported by a Colonel working for the Ministry of Interior. The daily added, the attempt was foiled when a senior inspector working for the Customs Department at the port noticed the value of imported goods in the documents was not in line with the quality, so he ordered to open the containers.
The Colonel reportedly tried in vain to intervene through one of the senior employees at the Shuwaikh Port Customs. The source added the containers were filled with counterfeit stationery and office utilities. Al-Jalawi has ordered an investigation to know the names of persons who tried to release the containers. They will be referred to the Public Prosecution and charged as accomplices to smuggle counterfeit goods into the country.
