Load management: PM stresses tapping of alternate energy sources, shifting GENCOs & IPPs to natural gas

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday directed the Cabinet Committee on Energy to devise a comprehensive load management mechanism to improve electricity supply by the summer of 2015.

He gave this task while chairing the 5th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy held in the federal capital. The meeting reviewed progress on the decisions taken in the previous meetings. The prime minister stressed employing cost-effective and most efficient energy resources in order to meet the energy needs of the country in short, medium and long terms.

The prime minister said that more efforts must be made in order to produce energy at low cost making it affordable for the common man. “We still have a long way to go and will have to undertake all steps necessary in this regard,” he added. He appreciated the steps taken by the Ministry of Water and Power in saving Rs 27 billion through better management and by minimising their losses.

According to the Prime Minister’s Media Office, the meeting has laid emphasis on tapping of alternate sources of energy and on shifting furnace oil based GENCOs and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to natural gas.
