Customs Court awards imprisonment to suspect in sales tax fraud case

KARACHI: Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has awarded two years and eight months imprisonment and Rs 1,500,000 fine to a suspect, Muhammad Adil Ashraf, in a sales tax fraud case.

During the hearing, counsels for the suspect and Customs Department completed their arguments. The counsel for the suspect argued that his client was falsely implicated in this case and the prosecution has not provided any evidence against him, therefore, the court may acquit him. However, the counsel for the Customs Department argued that the prosecution had provided all the evidences against the suspect and the court might punish him for tax fraud.

After hearing their arguments, the court awarded him two year and eight months imprisonment as already undergone period and a fine of Rs. 1,500,000. In default of payment, the suspect shall suffer simple imprisonment for one year.

According to the prosecution, the suspect was involved in mega tax fraud and the case was registered against him under Sales Tax Act, 1990.
