ATHENS: In the agency’s countervailing probe, it will look into if the companies importing pipe into the USA are being subsidized by the governments of the countries involved in the probe.Greece, India, South Korea and Turkey, and countervailing duty investigations into imports of large diameter welded pipe from China, India, South Korea and Turkey. The action is in response to petitions filed last month by members of the American Line Pipe Producers Association. Canada supplies about US$66-million of pipe annually to the United States for use in oil and gas pipelines. Commerce will determine whether imports from Canada, Greece, China, India,
Korea and Turkey are being dumped and assess whether pipe. The U.S. investigations, part of the 94 cases President Donald Trump’s administration has opened since taking office, are aimed at protecting U.S. manufacturers in global markets, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement. The unfair subsidy programs alleged include export subsidies, inputs for less-than-adequate-remuneration, tax incentives, and subsidized loans from China, India, Korea, and Turkey. It’s the latest incoming trade salvo from the United States: the Commerce Department is considering punitive duties on pipeline material from a half-dozen countries, including Canada.
