MEXICO: Skype has just launched its Skype Translator preview program. People from all across the world will be able to communicate with each other without the barriers of language in real-time.
Earlier this week, Skype announced its first phase of the Skype Translator preview program which will start with English and Spanish as its first two languages.
“We couldn’t be more excited, Skype Translator is the result of decades of research in speech recognition, automated translation, and general machine learning technologies, combined with an intense focus on the user experience,” said Skype in its website.
To use Skype Translator, the user simply selects the written and spoken language of the person he or she will be talking to, and from this moment on the program translates all messages, as well as speech, in near real-time.
The users can follow the conversation through the audio translation or on the screen with a translated transcript.
The function relies on innovations in speech recognition, automatic translation, and language processing from Microsoft Research which have been in development for more than a decade.
Through program’s machine-learning algorithms, it will be constantly improving as it is being used.
The beta version of Skype Translator will be available those who use Windows 8.1 and have signed-up for the Spanish language via the Skype Translator sign up page.
Moving forward, Skype plans to cover all languages and device in the coming years.
