CAPE TOWN: Two customs officials are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday for allegedly demanding a bribe from a businessman who wanted to evade tax obligations.
They were arrested following a “sting operation” involving the Hawks’ serious corruption investigation unit in Durban, Crime Intelligence members, and the special task force last week Thursday.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo, said the two South African Revenue Service (SARS) officials allegedly demanded a R200 000 bribe from the businessman. “The matter was reported to the Hawks and an undercover operation was conducted,” Mhlongo said.
“They were caught red-handed after receiving cash from the complainant. They were placed under arrest and charged accordingly.”
