WARSAW: The debate was organised by EURACTIV Poland and the European Parliament Information Office in Poland.
On 23 January, EU ambassadors endorsed the provisional December agreement on the waste legislation package, which was then also supported by the European Parliament’s Environment Committee in February.
EU member states agreed that in order to reuse and recycle municipal waste, 55% of the waste should be processed by 2025, 60% by 2030 and 65% by 2035. Member states will need to establish a separate collection of hazardous household waste from 2022, biowaste from 2023 and textiles from 2025.
Poland’s waste management system was already changed in the 2012-2016 period, by assigning responsibility for communal waste to communes, introducing fees for waste management and building new installations for waste treatment.
