The riser platform will handle all exports of oil and gas from the Johan Sverdrup field, and the HVDC power converter that will bring power from shore to the field will also be located on the platform.

Samsung Heavy Industries built the platform as three modules in South Korea, based on design and engineering provided by Aker Solutions. Two Dockwise vessels transported the modules to the offshore location earlier this year, with the heavy-lift vessel Thialf undertaking the offshore lifts.

The riser platform topsides weighs around 23,000 tons and is 166 m (544 ft) long, 54 m (177 ft) wide, and 42 m (138 ft) high.

According to Sverdrup operator Statoil, during the next few months more than 400 km (248 mi) of pipelines, 200 km (124 mi) of power cables, the drilling platform, two jackets, and a bridge will also be installed.
