Customs Court awards jail term to suspect booked in smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court Judge on Tuesday Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi awarded 14 days imprisonment and fine of Rs5,00,000 to suspect namely Syed Muhammad Ashraf son of Syed Dastageer on plead guilty as undergone period, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle foreign origin clothes etc.

During the hearing, above mentioned suspect appeared along with his counsel who moved petition for plead guilty and left himself on the mercy of the court, therefore, court framed charge on him, who plead guilty, after the hearing, court awarded imprisonment and fine to Rs5,00,000 to him as undergone. In case of default of payment of fine, he shall suffer simple imprisonment for two months, court mentioned in order.

According to the prosecution, on a credible informed, officials of the customs department intercepted one Hino truck bearing registration no JT-8993 and during the search, recovered 157 bales containing 2189 thaan and 179 thaan (in loose condition) of foreign origin Indian Polyester Undyed Unfinished Polyester Grey Fabric weighing 10136 kg valuing Rs1,06,79,680.

After the formalities, customs officials seized the above mentioned goods and suspects were also arrested. Case was registered against them for violation of under section 2 (s) 156, (2), 157 (2) 178 of customs act, 1969 punishable under clauses 8 & 89 of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 3 (i) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
