DC Saima declares seizure of non customs paid vehicle as legal

FAISALABAD: The Customs Adjudication Deputy Collector Saima Ayaz has decided a case of smuggled foreign origin Suzuki Alto and issued  Order in Original (ONO) No 60/2018 in favor of the Jhang Anti Smuggling Organization (ASO).

Sources told Customs Today that Sargodha ASO during a raid impounded Suzuki Alto bearing registration no: AAQ 632 Quetta worth Rs 4109060 and asked owner Anwar Ali son of Yar Muhammad to produce the documents showing the legal import of the vehicle but he remained failed. So ASO officials impounded the smuggling smuggled vehicle under Section 16 and 18 of the Customs Act 1969 Later the case was forwarded to the adjudication.

The Customs ASO impounded the vehicle and sent its chassis for forensic test to Islamabad Laboratory. The report of forensic lab revealed that the number was bogus and not original. The report also clarified that present chassis number is not original so the case was sent for adjudication for further proceeding.

Meanwhile, no one appeared to defend the case from respondent side and nor any written reply was received to the adjudication department. While Superintendent Tanveer Raza Naqvi appeared from the prosecution side and asserted that the seized vehicle fell under the ambit of section 2(s) of the Customs Act 1969. He also asked the court to issue orders regarding the confiscation of the vehicle.

Therefore, Deputy Collector Saima Ayyaz after reviewing the record of the case commented that the charges leveled in the show cause notice are established. She issued an ONO and ordered to impound the vehicle under Section 156(1)89(i) of the Customs Act 1969 read with Clause (a) of the preamble of SRO 499(1)/2009.
