They said that around 1,000 tyres and 1,700 rims were recovered from the containers. The Customs value of seized goods is estimated to be around Rs15 million while the market value of the goods is Rs22 million. These goods were being smuggled from Kuchlak Quetta to Lahore.

Sources said that the anti-smuggling drive of Customs department was a formidable task and department was striving to make it effective and create deterrence for traders of contraband goods.

In order to prevent the smuggling of Iranian diesel, causing a colossal loss of Rs20 billion per annum to the national exchequer, Amanullah Tareen urged all law-enforcement agencies to assist Customs department in terms of section 7 of Customs Act, 1969 which empowered and required all agencies to help Customs department in anti-smuggling functions. He further said that all agencies had legal cover to assist Customs department since smuggling could not be eradicated without effective inter-agency co-ordination.
