Betel nuts smuggling: Customs Court sends suspects on physical remand

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Ihsan Ullah son of Muhammad Ullah and Abdul Rahman son of Abdul Baqi to customs lock-up on physical remand in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband betel nuts and others goods.

On Friday, Customs Preventive Investigation Officer Saddam Hussain, produced the above-mentioned suspects before the court and informed that officials of Pakistan Rangers intercepted 5 Suzuki pick-ups loaded with betel nuts and other goods at Maripur Road Karachi and informed the customs officials; therefore, customs officials reached there and searched the pick-ups.

Investigation officer further informed that during the search of five pick-ups, customs officials found 12 kilogram betel nuts, 72,6750 pouches Rajni Brand Indian origin Gutkha. IO informed that after the formalities, customs authorities seized the above mentioned goods along with 5 pick-ups. He further submitted that show-cause notice have been issued and display on customs office against owners of vehicles as well as owners of said goods, accordingly, efforts are in progress to arrest the absconding accused persons and their associates.

After hearing, the court taken FIR on record and directed investigation officer to arrest the culprits and submit final charge sheet till next date of hearing.

Case was registered for violation of under section 2 (s) 156 (2) 157 (2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause 8 & 89 of section 156 (1) ibid read with section (i) of Imports & Exports Control Act, 1950 and others related laws.
