Higher prices for Irish consumers if UK chooses hard Brexit

UK retailers could pull out of Ireland as a result of increased barriers to trade after Brexit.

That is according to a study by the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA), a think tank which analyses the effect European affairs have on Ireland.

The organisation published three research papers yesterday, one of which focused on the impact that Brexit could have on Ireland’s distribution sector if the UK leaves the customs union. The authors considered a situation in which there would need to be customs clearance on goods moving between the UK and Ireland. Michael Creed, the agriculture minister, said earlier this year that unless Britain was required to maintain the same regulatory standards as the EU, some border checks may be required.
