Peshawar Customs needs new vehicles, staff to curb smuggling: Deputy Director Wajid Ali

PESHAWAR: Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Deputy Director Wajid Ali appealed to customs high ups to replace the old vehicles. He said Customs I&I urgently required new vehicles to make vigilance more effective within KPK to curb smuggling.

Deputy Director Wajid Ali expressed these views while giving exclusive interview to Customs Today. He said that the of customs I&I currently is working with only one superintendent who will also be retire during the end of current year whereas I&I Peshawar required four more superintendents to make the performance of directorate more effective. He added that most of senior customs staff including superintendents and inspectors are getting older and heading towards retirement, he added that new staff must be recruit for I&I Peshawar so that issue of shortage of staff should be resolved.

He said that under guidance of Director General Customs Intelligence and Investigations Shaukat Ali and Director I&I Peshawar Dr. Arsalan our squads are working efficiently, he added that I&I Peshawar seized two notable contraventions cases during last month. He said that first seizer was conducted against M/s Export Processing Zone Risalpur who was imported printing paper for printing purposes from abroad and again was sent it back to different countries without printing while it was got license of printing press.

He said that I&I Peshawar seized 22 wheeler truck loaded with huge quantity of imported paper worth Rs.40 million, he added that it was intercepted on information shared by Director I&I Peshawar Dr. Arslan. The I&I team also seized its gdown also where he pretend to do printing, the Deputy Director told that government have been issued the owner of M/s Nowshera Printing Press a license for export of printing material not to import of paper.

Deputy director said that recently Additional Collector of Customs Adjudication Jehan Bahadar also issued a ONO in favour of Customs Intelligence’s point of view and mis-declaration was established when the importer and PDP staff had cleared the consignment as unbranded sun glasses from China , whereas actually these were branded Ray Ban sun glasses ,  made in Italy.

He has ordered to recover the differential amount of duty and taxes and has imposed 20% RD on the release of these Sunglasses too.

Telling the comparison revenue realization figures during financial year 2017-18 and 2016-17 he narrated that during Fiscal Year 2017-18 the I&I Peshawar fetched Rs37 million extra revenue against same correspondence period Fiscal Year16-17.

He added that during Fiscal Year 2017-18 the I&I Peshawar seized goods and vehicles in worth of Rs183 million whereas Customs I&I seized goods in worth of Rs.146 million during correspondence Fiscal Year 2016-2017.
