KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Syed Muhammad Shafiq son of Khuda Nazar and Syed Aziz Ullah son of Syed Abdul Sattar to customs lock-up on physical remand who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 11,794 kilogram betel nuts.
On August 02, 2018, Muhammad Mehmood, Investigation officer and Naib Subedar of Pakistan Coast Guards produced the above mentioned suspects before the court and informed that on credible information, officials of the Pakistan Coast Guards intercepted Hino truck bearing registration number TLG-919 and during the search, recovered 11,794 kilogram of betel nuts from the truck.
He submitted that on the spot, officials asked them to produce legal documents, however, they failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, said goods and truck were taken into custody and accused also were taken into custody.
He said that prosecution needs further investigations from them, therefore, court may send back them to customs lock-up on physical remand, after the hearing, court sent them on physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.
According to the prosecution, case was registered against above mentioned suspects for violation of under Section 2 (s) and 16, 156 (1) (8) (89) and 157 of the Customs Act, 1969.
