FBR establishes special cells to curb money-laundering

ISLAMABAD: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has established Special Cell in all Customs Collectorates to ensure effective implementation of the currency regulation regimes and curb smuggling of foreign currency on the border.

The special cell will effectively monitor the area and report to FBR Headquarter regularly. The basic aim of the special cell is to accomplish the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) conditions.

Official sources told Customs Today that the board is fully trying to fulfill the Financial Action Task Force conditions regarding the money laundering, terrorism financing, foreign currency smuggling and for this purpose, the board has established special cell in Customs Collectorates in KP and Balochistan.

The board is aimed to upgrade its systems at border posts and ensure better coordination among its agencies to address the FATF concerns regarding smuggling of currency by terrorist groups operating along the border with Afghanistan.

Earlier, the board also decided to start 100% scanning project for imported goods especially from India, Afghanistan and Iran to resolve the issues of mis-declaration of goods, the malfunctioning in Afghan Transit Trade and violation and misuse of Green Channel. Under this project special scanners will be installed on all border crossings, seaports and customs clearing stations.
