Worsening pollution in Hong Kong persisted and raised the possibility of serious health risks, as air quality readings across the city on Saturday ranged from “very high” to “serious” in the afternoon.

At 6pm, 13 of the city’s 16 air monitoring stations recorded 10+ readings – the highest level of pollution on the city’s index and indicating a “serious” health risk. The three roadside stations in Causeway Bay, Central and Mong Kok were among those tallying the readings, as well as nine general stations including Central/Western, Kwun Tong and Yuen Long.

Levels at the remaining three stations ranged from 8 to 10, meaning a “very high” health risk.

The Environmental Protection Department at about noon on Saturday warned that the index readings at some general and roadside air monitoring stations might reach “serious” levels later in the day.
