ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) directed on Thursday the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to bring former ambassador to the United States (US) Husain Haqqani back to Pakistan regarding Memogate scandal.
During the hearing headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar, the top court ordered NAB to bring Haqqani back to the country, local media reported. Saying that since NAB has the authority to bring back Haqqani, the top court tasked the anti-corruption body with bringing Haqqani to the country.
In February, the SC had also directed the Federal Investigation Agency to bring back Haqqani to Pakistan and warned that he would be sent legal notice through a US lawyer if he failed to appear before the court.
In 2011, Haqqani had allegedly requested US in a memo to help Pakistan civilian government against its military after May 2 raid that had killed Osama bin Laden. The memo had been delivered to a high-ranking official asking for its support in the domestic disruption that had occurred after the raid.
The court proceedings had started after deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had demanded Haqqani’s resignation. However, Haqqani, had denied having anything to do with the memo.
