Customs Court sends suspects to jail booked in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Jan Muhammad son of Khudai Nazar and Najeeb Ullah son of Merban Khan to jail on judicial remand who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid betel nuts and other contraband goods.

On September 4, 2018, Investigation Officer Hafiz Muhammad Amir produced the above-mentioned accused before the court and informed that on actionable information, a team of Pakistan Coast Guards arrested the accused for possessing 14,867 kilogram betel nuts, 2812 kilogram foreign origin cloths and 3300 packets gutka Gold Z.

Investigation officer argued that it is prayed on behalf of the state that the accused persons may be remanded to Pakistan Coast Guards for further investigations and to find/reach the other conniving the culprit. However, after the hearing, court sent them to jail on judicial remand. The court also directed jail authorities to produce them on next date of hearing before the court

Court directed investigation officer to complete investigation and submit charge sheet on next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under Section 2 (s) 156 (2) 157 (2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under Clause 8 & 89 of Section 156 (1) ibid read with Section (i) of Imports & Exports Control Act, 1950 and others related laws complainant by Naib Sudedar Umer Hayat Pakistan Coast Guards.
