Time For Taxes Message Shows Taxation Due

Govt to introduce ‘Taxpayer Bill of Rights’ to create new tax culture

ISLAMABAD: Government is planning to introduce “Taxpayer Bill of Rights” or Taxpayers’ Charter which is practiced in the US in order to eliminate the traditional perception and create a new tax culture of mutual trust.

Official sources told Customs Today that government is reviewing the suggestions and recommendations submitted by reforms commission regarding restructuring of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and “Taxpayer Bill of Rights” which is practiced in the US is also a recommendation from the reforms commission under discussion.

The commission recommended to treat taxpayers fairly and equitably and extending all possible help and assistance to taxpayers while also ensure that authorities will maintain confidentiality of taxpayer’s tax affairs and details, documents, or declarations given during the course of any tax proceedings and for this purpose it need to introduced the “Taxpayer Bill of Rights”.

Sources added that reforms commission also recommended to make sure that government will redress taxpayers’ grievances by resolving their tax-related issues/problems also acting as good governess with a view to facilitate, educate compliant taxpayers’ tax affairs.

Sources also said that Technical and Miscellaneous Revenue Act of 1988 of USA also has a section of Taxpayer Bill of Rights which is a concept advocated by conservative and free market libertarian groups, primarily in the United States, a provision requiring that increases in overall tax revenue.
