Peshawar Customs seizes smuggled black tea worth Rs10m

PESHAWAR: Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation foiled a bid to smuggle a huge quantity of foreign origin black tea along with eight numbers of offending vehicles worth Rs10 million.

Additional Collector Wajid Ali while talking with Customs Today said that credible information was received by Dr. Arslan Subuctageen that an attempt to smuggle black tea will be made through KPK territory.

He immediately passed the information to Field Intelligence Unit (FIU) of Mardan region who made secret Nakabandi at Mardan near Shair Ghar and impounded eight Suzuki vehicles those were fully loaded with foreign origin tea.

Wajid said that after the interception, the vehicles were brought into I&I premises where after thorough checking the FIU staff found 140 bags 9520 kilograms of smuggled tea. The total value of tea is Rs6.6 million while the estimated value of seized offending (vehicles use for carrying smuggled goods) vehicles is estimated Rs 4 million.

He said that case has been registered against possessors of foreign origin tea and forwarded the same to I&P department for further investigation. He added that the operation was led by Superintendent Mehfooz and Inspector Rahmat Ullah Khan along with local police of Mardan region of I&I Peshawar.
