ASF foils money laundering bid at Lahore airport

LAHORE: Airport Security Force (ASF) on Saturday foiled money laundering bids by arresting two passengers, including a woman, with foreign currency worth millions of rupees at the Lahore airport.

According to ASF officials, $39,100 (approx. Rs5.4 million) were recovered while searching the baggage of a passenger leaving for Bangkok through an international airline flight.

Another woman, Li Zen, also leaving for Bangkok, was held after $22,505 (approx. Rs3.1 million), ¥1,671 (approx. Rs2,000) and Rs10,400 were recovered from her possession.

The ASF confiscated the recovered foreign currency worth over Rs8.5 million and arrested the culprits, who were later handed over to customs officials for further investigation.

As per the revised rules of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) regarding foreign exchange, a passenger can carry up to $10,000 or equivalent notes of another currency while going abroad.

The SBP has also clarified that people travelling to or from Pakistan can carry up to Rs10,000 in cash.
