NEW YORK: Alfa Romeo’s upcoming RWD midsize sedan revives the Giulia badge, is still half a year away from its official debut, but details of its power are starting to leak out.

According to sources within Fiat-Chrysler’s engine suppliers the new midsize sedan will get three new engines, two petrol and one diesel.

The flagship motor will be a 2.9 litre version of the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte’s 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6, which in the Giulia is expected to push out 357kW substantially more than what’s offered in the Maseratis.

While the 2.9 litre twin-turbo V6 will be reserved for a range-topping, BMW M3-rivalling performance model, the rest of the range will get by with diesel and petrol turbo four-cylinder engines.

The four-pot turbo petrol will produce between 135kW and 246kW, and will be available with manual and automatic transmissions as well as rear and all-wheel drive.

Dubbed the Global Medium Engine, it will also see service in many other Alfa Romeo and Fiat-Chrysler group models.

A 2.2 litre diesel is expected to round out the Alfa midsize sedans engine range, with outputs ranging between 100kW and 156kW.

Besides the new engines destined for the midsizer, Alfa Romeo is also rumoured to be working on a new version of Fiat’s VM Motori-supplied 3.0 litre turbodiesel V6 with up to 250kW.

That engine will likely be seen in a future Alfa large sedan and SUV.

Expect to hear more about Alfa Romeo’s midsize sedan as fans draw closer to its official launch in late June 2015.
