Two suspects, who had evaded paying Rs 40 million Customs duty pay on a stock of imported ‘Beedi’ leaves, have been further remanded until 5th of March.
The Colombo Magistrate had issued the order when the two suspects were produced before the court today (25).
A container of ‘Beedi’ leaves was imported to the country recently under the guise of importing garments from Bangladesh. However, the importers had evaded paying Customs duty pay amounting to Rs 40 million for the container in question.
Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Sri Lanka Customs had carried out an investigation into the incident.
The suspects had planned to re-import the ‘Beedi’ leaves the stock to Italy via air routes, the Acting Media Spokesperson and Deputy Director of Customs Vipula Minuwanpitiya stated.
