KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Rooh Ullah S/o Muhammad Qasim and Farhan Afzal S/o Muhammad Afzal to customs department on physical remand, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 600 kg betel nuts.
On March 5, 2019, investigation officer of customs preventive produced above mentioned suspects before the court and informed that on an actionable information, customs team intercepted one Toyota Surf jeep bearing registration no BD-0732 and recovered 600 kilogram betel nuts worth Rs166,200.
He further informed the court that during the search, customs team asked suspects to produce lawful documents, however, they failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, goods along with vehicle were seized and suspects also taken into custody of customs department.
He argued that prosecution needs further interrogation from them therefore, court may grant their physical remand, after the hearing, court sent them back to customs department on physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.
According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under Section 2 (s) 156 (2) 157 (2) and 178 of Customs act, 1969 punishable under Clause 8 & 89 of Section 156 (1) ibid read with Section 3 (1) of Imports & Exports Control Act, 1950.
