Customs Court approves remand of suspects involved in betel nuts smuggling

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Rooh Ullah son of Muhammad Qasim and Farhan Afzal son of Muhammad Afzal to Central Jail on judicial remand who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 600 kilograms betel nuts.

On March 14, 2019, investigation officer produced the above-mentioned suspects before the court and informed that on information, customs team intercepted Toyota Surf jeep bearing registration no BD-0732 and recovered 600 kilograms betel nuts valuing Rs166,200.

He further informed the court that during the search, customs team asked suspects to produce lawful documents, however, they failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, goods along with vehicle were seized and suspects were also taken into custody of customs department.

He argued that prosecution needs further interrogation from them, therefore, court may grant their physical remand, however, after the hearing, court sent them to jail and directed investigation officer to complete investigation and submit charge sheet against above mentioned suspects.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under Section 2 (s) 156 (2) 157 (2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under Clause 8 & 89 of Section 156 (1) ibid read with Section 3 (1) of Imports & Exports Control Act, 1950.
