LAHORE: A joint investigation team, formed to probe the Model Town tragedy, on Wednesday recorded the statement of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat prison according to media reports.

A five-member JIT, led by IG Motorway AD Khawaja, prepared 22 questions for Nawaz and he was quizzed in his barrack.

The JIT had sought formal permission from the accountability court to record Nawaz’s statements in the case.

The Model Town incident took place on June 17, 2014, in which 14 people were killed and 100 others injured after police launched an assault on Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) supporters gathered outside the residence of their party chief Muhammad Tahirul Qadri in Model Town, Lahore.

A subsequent judicial inquiry report on the incident had pointed fingers at then Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah and the Punjab police for what had transpired that day.

On March 18, the team could not record his statement as statements of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) were also being recorded on the same day.

Meanwhile, an accountability court also permitted the JIT to record statements of the former railway minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, who had also been nominated in the case, in camp prison.
