KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects Naveed son of Muhammad Haroon and Tariq Ali son of Muhammad Akram to customs department on physical remand who are booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid Lux bar soap, Pears transparent soap, betel nuts and other contraband goods.
On March 26, 2019, investigation officer of customs preventive produced above-named suspects along with First Information Report (FIR) and informed that on an actionable information, customs preventive team raided a godown situated at plot no 270 No 5 Haroonabad, SITE, Karachi and found 84,000 pieces of Lux bar soap valuing Rs2,069,760; 56,650 pieces of Pears transparent soap valuing Rs1,585,920; 7060 kilograms betel nuts worth Rs1,383,760. Total value of seized goods is Rs5,039,440.
He further informed the court that during the raid, suspects were asked to produce lawful documents, however, they failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, goods were seized and suspects were also taken into custody.
He submitted that prosecution needs further investigation from them, therefore, court may send them to customs department on physical remand, after the hearing, court sent them on physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce them on next date of hearing before this court.
According to the prosecution, case was registered against them for violation of under Section 2(s), 156 (2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under Clauses 8 & 89 of Section 156 (1) ibid read with Section 3(1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950 complainant by Senior Preventive Officer Iftikhar Hussain Khan.
