SHC acquits Appraiser Syed Hamid Umer from corruption charges

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) dismissed an appeal filed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against Customs Appraiser Syed Hamid Umer in an inquiry pertaining to the alleged accumulation of moveable and immoveable assets beyond his known sources of income and embezzlement of public funds.

On March 28, 2019, a two-member bench, headed by Justice Naimatullh Phalpoto announced the verdict.

In its judgment, court declared that prosecution has not produced any material against suspect, therefore, accused is acquitted from NAB charges.

Earlier, NAB Court had also acquitted the above-mentioned suspect in 2013 and NAB officials filed an appeal before the SHC, challenging NAB court judgment in which court had acquitted the same.

According to the NAB prosecution, Syed Hamid Umer is involved in corrupt practice and made assets beyond his known sources of income and embezzled public funds, and NAB reference was filed after inquiry and investigation with approval of competent authority according with law in which sufficient evidences are available.

However, NAB court was not satisfied from prosecution and acquitted the suspect.
